Our work in the UK is in Safeguarding and Child Protection and focused on supporting and promoting
the welfare of children and families of African origin in communities in the South East of England. We
started operations in 2008 with a preventative program funded by ‘Grassroots Grants’ called “The
Black Parents Empowerment Program” (BPEP) a safeguarding awareness programme ran in local
churches and black community groups to support African families and prevent their children from
abuse.
What We Do
We support Black African Children and Families through;
Safeguarding and Child Protection awareness programmes:
Many families migrate unaware of the laws, policies and cultural differences between their countries of origin and the UK. The benefits of safeguarding training, education and support for families is enormous and has a generational ripple effect. It is preventative work and has the potential to save many children from the local authority care systems as well as prevent family breakdown. Lack of this support will continue to increase the likelihood of family breakdown, child abuse and children going into the care system. affect education, health, career and the general well being of families.
Parenting classes/programmes:
We help parents prepare for their roles at each developmental stage of their children and promote the use of positive parenting practices. Research points to the efficacy of parenting classes. One study suggests that parenting classes are effective at improving parenting skills. Another suggests that they can also lead to long-term benefits even after the class has ended. Parenting education programs can help improve communication between parents and children, and result in an overall better understanding between family members. Parental programmes have also been known to Improve parental mental health and well-being
Domestic Abuse Intervention:
We engage adults especially African men in the prevention of domestic violence and challenge harmful gender stereotypes. We raise awareness about the causes, signs and impact of these sort of abuse, helping to educate African communities about available support services and resources.
Healthy Relationship Programmes:
We provide one to one support to families to prevent breakdowns of family relationships. We also organise community events, develop and distribute materials as well as run workshops to promote healthier family relationships.
Advocacy & Mckenzie Friend Support:
We support African families who find the child protection and social services system difficult to navigate and understand.
Counselling:
We provide a safe and confidential environment to African parents where they can share their thoughts, feelings and experiences with a trained counsellor and signpost for further support when necessary.
